Back in April 1991 all hell broke loose on board the M/V Haven, one of the largest tankers in service in the world at that time. It had discharged some of its cargo at Multedo and was waiting off Arenzano for the right time to discharge the rest. It is well known that the cargo price was fixed at the time of discharge based on the current price of oil per barrel, this is why only a part of the cargo was discharged at a time. Something didn't work in the inertisation of the hold and .....the rest is history. The ship burnt day and night, agonising for several days, before sinking and becoming one of the most famous wrecks in Italy. The outline of the ship in flames, at night, could be seen from everywhere. 300 metres of ship which will be remembered for a great deal of time by people who lived this episode directly.
Now it is home to many living species starting with oysters which proliferate inside and outside the hull, as well as small groupers, spiny lobsters, scorpion fish, spirographs......
It has become a destination for a great many divers who come from all areas of Italy and Europe to visit this immense wreck. The dive is not easy, the depth and distance from the shore mean great care must be taken, but all the strict preparation is rewarded by the emotions that can be experienced there.
